The Fifth Guizhou Children's Hand-drawn Map Competition is anticipating excellent submissions from juvenile participants from across the province. In preparation, a training session occurred on Aug 3 for the Guiyang tryout.

More than 50 youths will compete in the city-level trial, divided into four groups: children under the age of 6, children age 6 to 8, 9 to 12 and 13 to 15.

To help them achieve good results, the Guiyang Bureau of Natural Resources and Planning organized professional training in map drawing at the Guiyang Urban and Rural Planning Exhibition Hall.

Accompanied by their parents and guided by their teachers, the competitors carefully examined the geographic information promotion area in the exhibition hall, learned about the evolution of China's territory and gained a correct understanding of national territory.

The staff members of the bureau's departments of geographical mapping and science and technology information introduced the bureau to the young guests. They then further explained three significant types of map errors, how to identify and correct them and how to access authoritative maps.

Through this training, participants' awareness of national territory was enhanced, and patriotic enthusiasm strengthened. Also, the children became more interested in map-making.

According to organizers of the competition, experts will appraise submitted works in mid-September and decide winners of the first-, second- and third-place prizes for each group. The best ones will be recommended for competition at the provincial level.
