To safeguard the security of drinking water, Qingzhen – a county-level city administered by Guiyang, the capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province – launched a treatment project at Yingyan Reservoir in 2020.

Yingyan Reservoir was approved by the Guizhou provincial government in 2015 and has functioned as a water supply for residents and industries, as well as a flood-prevention mechanism.

The treatment project is focused on the proper disposal of sewage and garbage and the treatment of pollution and waste from the animal agriculture industry. According to local authorities, a total of 10 million yuan ($1.44 million) has been invested in the cleanup efforts.

Four sewage treatment plants are covering five villages. Once water at the plants achieves A-level status under the urban sewage treatment plant pollutant discharge standards, it will be used for agricultural irrigation.

Meanwhile, household waste is processed by the local sanitation department and is handled separately from livestock pollution.

Through these efforts, Qingzhen's treatment rate of domestic sewage has reached 60 percent, while the harmless disposal rate of household garbage and the utilization rate of livestock manure have both reached 70 percent. The quality of the city's drinking water has reached 90 percent.
