The capital city of Southwest China's Guizhou province, Guiyang, recently released a work program outlining the comprehensive investigation of illegal land use to guarantee a minimum land area for cultivation.

It has been reported that Guiyang has organized a special work team made up of members from Guiyang's municipal bureau of natural resources and planning, the bureau of agriculture and rural affairs, the bureau of forestry, the bureau of water affairs, the municipal comprehensive law-enforcement bureau, the municipal transportation commission and other government departments.

All cultivated land and permanent basic farmland shall be inspected to uncover illegal land use. In addition, relevant classified disposal measures shall be formulated to curb the growth of non-farmland areas.

Various departments shall act together to select construction sites for projects. For farmland that must be occupied, it is essential to declare the construction plans and land use according to laws and procedures.

Those who have illegally constructed structures on farmland will receive serious punishments.

Guiyang will apply the strictest possible systems to protect arable land and do everything in its power to stop the illegal use of farmland areas.
