The third technological forum on location-based services was held on May 25 in Guiyang, capital city of Southwest China's Guizhou province.

Location-based services use a smartphone's satellite-based navigation system to track a person's location. After the user opts in, the service can identify their location down to a street address. The information is used to perform services and functions – with some allowing consumers to "check in" at restaurants, coffee shops, stores, concerts and other places or events.

The forum was co-held by the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the State Internet Information Office and the Guizhou municipal government during the China International Big Data Industry Expo 2021 that was staged in the city.

Li Rui, vice-governor of Guizhou, praised the development of big data while hosting the forum. The province is also looking forward to greater things from the burgeoning big data industry and location-based services.

Apart from a strategic cooperation signing ceremony and an appointment ceremony, the forum also heard keynote talks given by experts on the internet of everything, big data-driven photogrammetry and the Beidou Navigation Satellite System.

The forum reportedly showcased a new developmental philosophy and technological innovation for the public and also helped publicize the potential of big data in a digitized world.
