Guiyang makes use of 'secondary water source' to quench city's thirst

As recycled water has advantages such as manageable production costs, local accessibility, stability, reliability, and high assurance rates, many water-deficient cities consider it a critical "secondary water source". Relevant data indicates that 70 percent of treated urban wastewater can be reused as recycled water.

To date, China has implemented pilot projects for recycled water utilization in 116 cities. Recycled water is widely used in urban greening, road cleaning, vehicle washing, construction, and ecological landscaping, reducing wastewater discharge while effectively increasing water supply and enhancing water resource utilization efficiency. Guiyang serves as an exemplary model in this regard.

Through continuous supply from two submerged recycled water plants, Guiyang's main urban area has rejuvenated the Guancheng River, which had been dry for nearly 20 years but has now undergone a resurgence and revitalization. In recent years, Guiyang has focused on upstream management, constructing 49 recycled water plants. Treated recycled water is primarily used to supplement environmental landscaping water, with some also used in municipal sanitation and green space development, effectively alleviating urban water supply-demand imbalances.
