Guizhou has made significant progress in restoring abandoned mines in recent years, steadily advancing ecological recovery efforts across the region. By the end of 2025, a total of 5,061 hectares of abandoned areas had been rehabilitated, meeting targets set for the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25).

A nationwide survey launched in 2021 identified 5,815 abandoned mine sites in urgent need of restoration, covering 5,453 hectares and involving 27 mineral types, primarily construction sand, coal, and bauxite. As one of China's major resource-rich provinces with a long history of mining, Guizhou faces complex challenges, including a large number of scattered sites and the widespread presence of karst landscapes, which complicate restoration work.

To address these, the province has adopted a systematic and multi-faceted approach, with policy frameworks strengthened, including the formulation of a long-term ecological restoration plan and the establishment of a high-level coordination mechanism to ensure effective implementation.

Guizhou has also enhanced digital and technological support by building a comprehensive database of abandoned mines, applying targeted "one mine, one strategy" solutions, and utilizing advanced monitoring systems integrating satellite, aerial, and ground data to further ensure precise management and evaluation.
